Several changes and improvements have taken place across the General University Classroom (GUC) inventory over the past year.
Abelson Hall
Abelson Hall will be offline for the Fall 2026 semester while it undergoes a major renovation. The classroom will receive new paint, flooring, furniture, and technology upgrades. Accessibility improvements will also be made, including addressing HVAC noise concerns and providing additional seating options. To better support large-class discussions and active learning, the renovated space will have a reduced seating capacity. Renovations are expected to be completed in Spring 2027.
Heald Hall
Demolition of Heald Hall began this year. The GUC classrooms capacity previously housed in Heald Hall is being replaced by three new General University Classrooms in Schweitzer Engineering Hall.
Smith Gym
As of May 2026, the General University Classrooms formerly managed as part of the GUC inventory in Smith Gym are now departmentally controlled. Instructors interested in scheduling these spaces should contact the Department of Kinesiology.
These updates are part of ongoing efforts of the General University Classroom Committee to provide flexible, accessible, and technology-enhanced learning spaces across campus.
