Join the Disaster Shelter Team
When a natural disaster strikes, many people need help. At the same time, many people want to provide it. “People say they want to help, and they don’t know how.” says Jessica Perone, assistant director of engaged learning at the center for civic engagement.
Natural disasters such as wildfires and floods are becoming more frequent and more intense in Washington. Washington State University has the infrastructure in place to respond to them. But it needs people who know how to respond. In partnership with the Red Cross, the Washington State University Disaster Shelter Team will receive the training to help during natural disasters.
If a disaster strikes, the Red Cross will contact the Disaster Shelter Team. “Being on the team is just saying you’re ready, if you’re able in that moment,” says Perone. If they are, they would help set up an evacuation shelter and ensure the people impacted by the disaster — both at WSU and in the broader community — have their needs met.
The training will be from 9 a.m. to noon on National Make a Difference Day, Saturday, October 26, in Butch’s Den on the lower level of the Compton Union Building. It is open to faculty, staff, and students. For more information and to register, visit GivePulse. For questions, contact Jessica Perone.
