Cougs Help Cougs: Upholding Our Values

To our Coug community,

As we strive to maintain a safe and supportive environment at WSU, it is important to address recent concerns. While many students contribute positively to our community, we have received multiple reports of unsafe behaviors, including alcohol violations, violence, sexual misconduct, property damage, and alleged hazing. We take these issues seriously and are enhancing safety measures, including increased police patrols and enforcement.

The Center for Community Standards and WSU Compliance and Civil Rights(CCR) continue to work closely with campus and local law enforcement to investigate reported incidents. Both units provide resources, investigations, support, education, and training related to submitted complaints. These efforts are in addition to the numerous prevention and educational engagements we have with students before and while they are on campus.

We ask all members of our community to continue to help. If you see inappropriate behavior, speak up and report these issues to the Center for Community Standards. By ignoring them, those individuals are putting themselves and our community at risk.

We also know that incidents like those listed above are often exacerbated during football game weekends, when guests come into town, and on special occasions like Family Weekend. Please review the information at the end of this message regarding football games, Family Weekend, existing prevention resources, and reporting incidents of concern.

While the reports we’ve received are concerning, we also recognize that most of our Cougar family is engaging in behavior that supports a community of care, and for that we say thank you.

Take care, and Go Cougs!

Football Games and Family Weekend

For those attending football games, please be aware that rules around prohibited items coming into the stadium will be strictly enforced. Guests attempting to bring in any banned substances or bottles will be barred from attending the game.

This weekend and every day, we ask that all members of the WSU community proactively engage in behavior that supports a community of care. There are many Family Weekend events planned to create opportunities to connect and share campus life with guests and family members.

Responding to Emergencies or Incidents

If you or anyone you know needs immediate assistance, please call 9-1-1. If you are aware of a student or student group engaging in inappropriate and/or prohibited conduct, please report it to the Center for Community Standards. Off-campus graffiti and nuisance code violations may also be reported online to the City of Pullman

If you see a friend or stranger experiencing symptoms of alcohol or drug intoxication and needing medical help, you can contact local police, WSU police, medical professionals, university staff members, and/or resident advisors for assistance. Under the Good Samaritan Law, you will not receive any formal WSU discipline for alcohol or drug use and possession under our community standards, and neither will the intoxicated individual.
